Job Opening – Machine Shop Supervisor

The Rose Corporation in Reading, PA is growing and has an immediate opening for a Machine Shop Supervisor (Working) / Estimator. In this position, the successful candidate will:
  • Supervise machining personnel and issue work assignments to machining personnel.
  • Provide leadership, coach, and train personnel to achieve product quality, efficiency, housekeeping, and equipment maintenance standards.
  • Review operations and documentation for compliance to procedures and fixed practice requirements.
  • Coordinate use of manpower between jobs to meet priorities, objectives, eliminate waste, and improve the flow of production.
  • Also responsible for using previous cost data, knowledge of manufacturing processes, and department standards for pricing, and estimates labor and material costs from customer specs for the purpose of preparing bids for contracts for sales costs.
  • Works with Project Management and Production Coordinators to review and communicate data for cost-effective follow-through.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure machinists are operating according to planned work schedules and meeting delivery commitments to internal customers.
  • Production Control (scheduling, prioritizing, expediting, and reporting) of all machine shop jobs to internal customers.
  • May be required to operate machine tools as dictated to meet production schedules
  • Monitor machine maintenance, facilitate repairs and make capital equipment recommendations for items needing replacement.
  • Budget planning, adherence, and reporting.
  • Handle human resource issues for staff including scheduling, discipline, and training/development.
  • Lead continual improvement initiatives within machine shop.
  • Develop, maintain, and report on capacity and machine schedules to maintain proper delivery schedules and internal deadlines.
  • Develop, maintain and report on facility maintenance and upkeep including the input and management of an annual department budget of approximately $150,000.
  • Quote all new components requests by internal and external customers.
  • Develop, maintain and report on quotation processes including actual quotes, incorporation in work instructions, and analysis of labor variance.
  • Assure that there is a good understanding of customer specifications and delivery dates and work toward satisfying both for customers and internal departments.
  • Lead a regular schedule of team meetings.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement programs by providing input, as able, to various quality, equipment, training, and operations issues within The Rose Corporation.
  • Leads and participates in 6-S activities; especially in the immediate work area.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews and approves daily timesheets for accuracy and legibility. Takes same-day corrective action in all cases to assure that time can be logged for all co-workers daily with no open issues.
  • Hold personnel responsible for fully completing assignments, cleaning up, putting tools, unused parts, and supplies away, before moving to the next assignment or leaving at the end of the shift. Promote and encourage a 6S atmosphere.
  • Hold personnel responsible for following all company policies, procedures, and requirements (attendance and breaks, safety, standard operating, manufacturing, and maintenance procedures, employee handbook rules, etc.). Review attendance records and take action to address problems and abuse.
  • Provide relevant information and documentation for the performance appraisals process for both annual and 90-day (new employee or new position) evaluations.
  • Assists HR to develop specific formal coworker training programs with specific miles and measurements designed to move coworkers to full productively within an agreed-upon timeline. Determine when disciplinary measures are necessary.
  • May be required to conduct (teach) in-house training (safety, operational, quality, maintenance, and orientation) for employees and/or contractors assigned to the shift. Coordinate activities with the Safety Manager.
  • Participates in the interviewing and hiring of the workforce.
  • Provide additional supervisory coverage for other areas of the shop to cover vacation, sick time, etc.
  • Control of some departmental expenses, including consumables, to budget.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Machining Technology, Manufacturing, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering is preferred, but as a minimum of 10 years of practical experience in the operation of multiple machining equipment, both CNC and Manual controlled.
  • Minimum of 5 years of personnel management.
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and/or Continuous Improvement experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office modules including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience in AutoCAD and/or Mas90 is preferred
SKILLS, ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business literature including cut lists, drawings, work schedules, etc.
  • Able to write general instructions, and procedures (if appropriate).
  • Can effectively present information and respond to questions from supervised employees, other company managers, co-workers, and customers.
  • Good math skills including the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Knowledge of some trigonometry is also important.
  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions quickly if necessary.
  • Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Knowledge and ability to read and decipher drawings, sketches and blueprints to determine different sizes, shapes, dimensions, hole sizes, etc.
  • Ability to operate and instruct on most of the machines and equipment used in the machining process.
  • Ability to learn to operate a Giddings & Lewis CNC Horizontal Boring Mill using a NUMERI PATH 8000 B control.
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedule and a willingness to work weekends when necessary to meet important customer ship dates.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; good writing skills.
  • Ability to focus on details and understand the overall impact of events and decisions.
  • Strong leadership skills; demonstrated competency in the supervisory and technical skills required to fulfill the position’s responsibilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work with personnel at all organizational levels.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
