The Structural Steel Fabrication and Installation Process

Fabricating and installing structural steel is a multi-step, highly technical process that transforms raw steel into fully assembled frameworks. Key stages include:
  • Material Selection & Design Planning: The process begins with selecting the right grade and type of steel, in coordination with engineers and architects, to meet the load, durability, and safety requirements of the project. Detailed shop drawings or BIM/CAD models outline every beam, column, and structural connection.

  • Cutting & Shaping: Raw steel bars, plates, or beams undergo cutting (band saws, plasma or laser cutters), shearing, and shaping to match design specifications.

  • Forming & Bending (if required): For custom profiles or curved elements, steel can be bent or rolled to precise shapes.

  • Welding & Assembly: Fabricators weld, bolt, or rivet individual components together into subassemblies or full structural frames. This step often includes a trial assembly (shop-fit) to ensure precise fit and alignment.

  • Finishing & Surface Treatment: To protect structural steel from corrosion and environmental exposure, treatments like galvanizing, painting, or protective coatings are applied.

  • Installation / Erection On-Site: Once fabricated, steel components are transported to the site, lifted into place, and bolted or welded to form the building’s structural frame. The installation phase must meet exacting standards to guarantee structural integrity and safety.
When performed correctly, this process ensures that the structural framework — the backbone of any building or industrial structure — is built to exact specifications and will perform reliably under load.
